Powering Ahead with Operational Excellence

The Problem

Centrica Energy has started a journey of improving its Operational Excellence within its Power Division, and required expert input to help build its own internal capability, and help in resolving a complex outage issue in one of its new power stations.

The business had a history of jumping to solutions rather than finding out the root causes of problems and wished to equip the staff in new ways of solving both simple and complex problems.

The Solution

Centrica Energy appointed Bourton Group to design a bespoke training programme encompassing the best of Lean and Six Sigma techniques starting with a basic awareness of 3C’s problem solving, and progressing to solving complex problems using DMAIC as the problem solving methodology.

They also retained one of our Master Black Belts to work with their local team to identify the root cause of their power outage at their newest power plant.

The Benefits

The Power Division has built up its internal CI team to tackle a range of problems within the off shore and renewables section of the business. The complex power plant problem was resolved, avoiding cost recharges of £4M PA, and resulting in the OEM redesigning their equipment to remove a systemic fault with their product.

The Advanced Practitioners course has been run several times now and some of the team are now taking on Green Belt training so they can be self sufficient to tackle the more complex problems in house.
