Six Sigma Group (a subsidiary of Bourton Group) client, Carillion Roads scoops prestigious industry

Carillion Roads scooped Contractor of the Year at the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards event last night based on its pioneering ECI project which completes the busy motorway network from London to Glasgow. On behalf of clients, the Highways Agency, the scheme involves upgrading 9km of the A74 dual carriageway between Carlisle and Guardsmill to dual 3 lane motorway . The road carries 42,000 vehicles a day including 10,000 heavy goods vehicles and crosses the West Coast Main Line railway and the River Esk.

Award judges were so impressed with the project they said: “It sets new standards for the construction industry.” Judges complimented Carillion Roads on its: "integrated team and cost focus approach", which ensured "best value to the client". Judges also praised Carillion Roads for "incorporating six sigma process improvement methods " which have allowed consistent forecasting 9 per cent under budget; its charity work and impressive commitment to ecological sustainability and community relations which allowed the project to achieve an impressive 38 out of 40 Considerate Contractors’ score. The scheme's Public Inquiry of only one week was also highlighted for praise due to the pro active approach taken by the Project Team.
